The Discover Kyoto Program — Key Facts

The Discover Kyoto Program (DKP) is Nihongo Center’s year-round cultural immersion program, included in all tuition packages at no extra cost. It organizes guided cultural experiences throughout the academic year — from tea ceremony and traditional crafts to outdoor activities and local festivals — designed to give language students direct exposure to the culture they are studying.

Cultural activities are conducted in Japanese — they are part of the immersion, not a break from it.

Guided activities with local artisans, temple staff, and Kyoto cultural institutions give students practical listening and speaking exposure outside the classroom. Participation is optional, but most students find the DKP one of the most memorable parts of their year in Kyoto.

What is the “Discover Kyoto Program”?

Because learning Japanese doesn’t stop at the classroom door, we created the Discover Kyoto Program (DKP). It’s much more than a simple tour; it’s a series of immersive experiences designed to connect you with the history, traditions, and modern life of Kyoto. Guided by our staff and Japanese student volunteers, you’ll practice your Japanese in real-world situations while creating unforgettable memories.

Tradition & Spirituality

Dive into the heart of spiritual Japan. Our activities take you to historic locations for authentic experiences. Learn the art of patience during a Zazen meditation session, admire the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms (Hanami), or be dazzled by the fiery colors of the maple trees in autumn (Momiji).

Nature & Adventure

For lovers of the great outdoors, Kyoto and its surroundings offer a spectacular playground. Whether it’s rafting down the Hozugawa River, hiking Mt. Fuji in the summer, skiing on fresh snow in the winter, or enjoying a friendly BBQ at Lake Biwa, these outings are the perfect opportunity to get active and form strong bonds with fellow students.

Arts, Crafts & Festivities

Feel the rhythm of Japan with an introduction to the powerful Taiko drums. Participate in our big Sports Day to compete in friendly games with other students and staff. And of course, celebrate the end of each semester at our Farewell Parties—moments of joy and emotion to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of new friendships.

A Flexible, “À La Carte” Program

We organize about eight DKP events throughout the year, usually on weekends and holidays. You are free to choose the activities that interest you most. To sign up, you simply pay the participation fee for your chosen event at the school. The full year’s calendar is available at the beginning of each semester!
