How to Find Your Accommodation

Finding a place to live in a new country can seem challenging, but we’re here to guide you. We provide you with the resources, and you have the freedom to choose the option that’s best for you. The process is straightforward:

  • Explore Our List of Trusted Partners (2-3 months before your term begins) We will send you a list of links to the websites of our recommended housing partners. We have chosen these companies because they have a great reputation and are experienced in helping international students find a home in Kyoto.
  • Contact the Housing Companies Directly This is the most important step. You should browse the websites and contact the companies you are interested in directly. This is often the easiest and fastest way for both you and the agency. Language is not a barrier: Most of our partners have English or Chinese-speaking staff available to help you.
  • Pro Tip: When you contact them, be sure to mention that you are a Nihongo Center student. They can then recommend the best and closest options for you.
  • Finalize Your Contract and Move-in Details All rental procedures, including the application, contract signing, payments, and confirming your arrival date, will be handled directly between you and the housing company. They will guide you through all the necessary steps to secure your room.

While our role is to connect you with trusted providers, please feel free to ask us if you have general questions before you start the process!

Student Accommodation in Kyoto: FAQ

Here are answers to some common questions. If you don’t see your question here, the housing agencies themselves will be happy to help!

1 – What should I mention when I contact a housing agency?

Always tell them you are a student of Nihongo Center. Our partners are familiar with our school and can help you find suitable options, often in locations that are convenient for commuting to your classes.

2 – Are utilities (gas, water, electricity) included in the rent?

It depends. For Shared Houses, utilities and Wi-Fi are often included in a fixed monthly fee. For Private Apartments, you usually need to set up and pay for these yourself. Be sure to confirm this with the housing agency for any place you are interested in.

3 – What about initial costs like a deposit or “key money”?

Initial costs vary greatly by company and building. Some may require a security deposit (usually refundable), while others might have non-refundable fees like ‘key money’ or a guarantor fee. This is a very important question to ask the housing agency directly so you can understand the total move-in cost.

4 – Will I need a Japanese guarantor?

This is one of the biggest benefits of using our trusted partners. They are experienced with international students and have systems in place that do not require you to find a personal Japanese guarantor, which is normally very difficult. They typically use a guarantor company instead, and the fee for this may be included in your initial costs.

5 – What is the minimum rental period?

Most student accommodations require a minimum stay of at least one semester (6 months). Shorter-term stays of 1-3 months can be more difficult to find and may have higher monthly rates.
